Blank Tiles: Don’t Waste the Most Flexible Tile You Have

Getting a blank tile feels great.

Then comes the dangerous part:

deciding what to do with it.

A blank can represent the letter you need, which makes it one of the most flexible tiles available to you.

That flexibility is valuable, so don’t automatically spend it on the first word you see.

Ask what the blank actually gives you

Suppose you’re one letter away from making a word.

Sure, the blank can solve that problem.

But before using it, ask:

Does this create a substantially better play?

If the blank turns an average move into a strong move, use it.

If you’re spending it just because it’s convenient, there may be a better opportunity.

A blank can rescue an ugly rack

Every word-game player knows the rack.

You look at your letters and think:

“Who gave me these?”

A blank can turn an awkward combination into something useful because it fills the exact hole your rack has.

That’s one reason keeping a blank can be valuable when you already have another decent play available.

Use the board before choosing the letter

Don’t decide:

“I’ll make this blank an R.”

and then search for somewhere to use an R.

Look at the board first.

Find your strongest opportunities and determine which missing letter would unlock them.

Let the board tell you what your blank should become.

Blanks are great for extensions

Sometimes the best blank play isn’t creating a brand-new word.

It might allow you to extend something that’s already on the board or connect areas that were previously difficult to reach.

Those plays can be easy to overlook if you’re only searching for a long word from your rack.

Don’t save it forever

There’s another side to this.

Some players protect a blank like they’re planning to leave it to their grandchildren.

The blank only helps you if you eventually use it.

If you see a strong opportunity, take it.

There’s no prize for finishing the game with the world’s most carefully preserved blank tile.

My basic rule

I think of blanks this way:

Don’t waste them. Don’t worship them. Use them when they create real value.

That simple approach will usually serve you better than automatically playing a blank immediately or automatically saving it.
